Inner Child and Parts Therapy

What are parts?

People are complicated creatures composed of many parts that are often conflicted! Parts correspond to life roles, emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Parts rise into, and fall out of, conscious awareness in response to the needs of life.

The adaption of parts enables safe and healthy navigation between different life roles. It is perfectly healthy to behave differently at the office, when spending time with friends or being alone with an intimate partner.

Who is the Inner Child?

The inner child is the emotional part of the psyche. The inner child holds pain from the past. The inner child, as any child, desires to feel accepted and loved.

Learning how to parent the child within is the basis of emotional empowerment because inner child therapy provides a framework through which one can take care of one’s own emotion needs.

Inner child work is the practice of self love. It creates a bridge between the logical and emotional parts of self and provides practical tools for fulfilling of emotional needs. Inner child work is the process of self love. The external world is a reflection of the internal world, therefore the more love one can give to oneself the more love one receives from the world.

The inner child therapy process

The clients is training in entering hypnosis and taken to a place of safety in their mind. The inner child is invited to float out of the adult’s heart and welcomed. A meeting takes place between the adult and the child during which the client is taught inner communication and bounding techniques.

Therapy work is multidimensional in nature and tailored to the needs of the client. It may involve integrative breath-work techniques, or the wisdom part of consciousness teaching the adult how to look after the child.

Inner child work can act as a bridge to regression therapy allowing for resolution of emotional patterns through healing unresolved trauma. It leads to an understanding of the past, building awareness of limiting emotions and healing them at their root.

As one aspect of the human psyche, inner child therapy can naturally be expanded into more generalized parts therapy (see below).

How does inner child therapy help intimate relationships?

The need for love is perhaps the most fundamental need of all. When emotional needs are not met internally, they are projected externally onto the world around us (particularly onto those that we are closest with!).

Emotions are vibrations. People deeply feel each other’s feelings and inevitably react to them (either consciously or unconsciously!). Emotions that have not been healed from the past inevitable arise in the present and reflect into the world around us.

Taking care of one’s own needs (inner relationship) is a foundation for enjoying healthy relationships with other people. Awareness of the child within provides a framework to discuss relationship conflicts, develop compassion, reduce pressure in relationships and enhance emotional intimacy.

Archetypal parts

The inner child is just one part of the core trilogy of the psyche.

The inner child is the emotional part of the psyche. The child holds unprocessed pain, is feminine in nature and relates to the past. The child has emotional needs including inner parenting and self love. As a normal child, the child has a desire to play and create.

The inner adult is the masculine part of the psyche. This part is logical and relates to the present. The adult must make informed decisions, create life balance and attend to physical and financial needs. The adult is in charge of plans and life direction.

Inner wisdom is the highest part of the psyche. This part may be understand as the inner voice that lies underneath all other voices (every inner voice relates to a part). Wisdom knows right from wrong and is often referred to as a “gut hunch”.

Wisdom might be understood to relate to the person that each one of us is striving to become and, as such, this part relates to the future. Wisdom knows the answer to every life challenge and has the ability to heal the other parts of the psyche as well.

Additional parts

The metaphor of parts can be used in hypnosis to directly communicate to any behavior. For example, the part that smokes cigarettes or the part that wants to drink.

A few more parts of the psyche worth mentioning are:

The Judge

This part that engages in (usually negative) inner commentary. This part may have been learned and can even take on the voice of a parent inside the client’s mind.

This is the part that can set up a pattern of self-sabotage. Saboteur usually has an inner belief that it’s behavior is protective. This part may be resistant to change due to a fear of the unknown.

Parts, behaviors and secondary gains

Parts are created for specific reasons, often as a protective measure in a certain situation. Every behavior has a “secondary gain” or “positive intention” behind it – an often protective role that is believed to be of benefit to the individual as a whole.

Perhaps it was learned at a point in the past that smoking cigarettes was a great way to meet new people, or that drinking alcohol gave the confidence to flirt with the opposite sex?

When this (usually unconscious) positive intention is brought to conscious attention it is possible to negotiate a new behavior which satisfies the original intention yet is healthy to every other part of the person. The result is easy release from habit, addictions and all types of limiting behaviors.

Inner conflict

Inner conflict is the result of parts finding themselves in opposition to each other. For example, one part may desire regular exercise while another desires to drink alcohol every night as a reward mechanism for hard work.

Such conflict can quite literally feel like different parts of oneself pulling in opposite directions. It is interesting that patterns of language reveal such conflict: “a part of me wants to leave this relationship but another part of me wants to stay”.

Common symptoms of inner conflict include anxiety, inability to make decisions, low energy and tiredness. A core objective of parts therapy is resolution of inner conflict leading to psychological health – defined in parts therapy as “every part working together as a team towards a unified goal”.

What is the parts therapy process?

The client is trained in entering hypnosis and taken to a safe room in their mind. Different parts of consciousness are invited to sit around a table. The clients is guided in therapy techniques to facilitate inner communication, negotiation and change.

Report is made with and between parts as they are allowed to communicate freely. It may be the case that the client is taught how to directly associate into and dissociate out of various parts and learn how to feel the emotions held within them.

Parts therapy may combined with other hypnosis therapy techniques, including regression therapy to gain awareness of when and why parts where created, NLP to shift perception of past events and EFT to release repressed emotions.

Parts therapy is usually a part of a hypnotherapy course of treatment.
