Family units are breaking down as people feel separate to and misunderstood by the people they love.

What is Counseling?

A professional counselor is trained to help the client look at life from a fresh perspective. The meeting itself is “fresh” in what the counselor has no knowledge of past history and there is no transference of personal belief, hopes and objectives.

Counseling is 100% confidential and takes place within the framework of the belief system of the client. At all times, the client is treated with acceptance and the belief that every person has inside every answer to life’s problems.

Challenges are explored are opportunities for personal growth and learning with appropriate questions asked in order to direct the client’s mind towards understanding the emotional structure that is present in each of our lives, and examining how the challenges of the present relate to the past.

The role of counseling in exploring trauma

Repression of emotion is the cause of psychosomatic disorders and has a negative impact on all forms of relationship. Repression may follow unresolved traumatic events. Perhaps there was no-one appropriate to speak to or that there was a feeling of shame that made it not safe to communicate.

Over time as rapport is built between client and therapist, a therapeutic relationship naturally forms. As trust develops, it is often the case that the client feels empowered to share thoughts and feelings that they may have been “keeping inside” throughout their lives.

Sometimes the very act of sharing a feeling is enough to release it. Understanding that every problem is underscored by emotion and that repressed emotions compound, the benefit of counseling can easily be seen.

Counseling and the conscious mind

Eyes open therapy communicates with the conscious mind to facilitate understanding and change. As Jung said “until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”. Counseling therapy leads to awareness that can benefit a person’s life by leading to practice of new behavior.

Counseling and it’s role in hypnotherapy

Information uncovered within counseling portion of a therapy session forms the basis of hypnotherapy. While counseling leads to logical understanding, hypnosis works directly with the emotional part of consciousness – the subconscious mind. The combination of counseling and hypnotherapy therefore forms an ideal basis for change work bringing together insight and practice.
